Description of the facility

The library is partially accessible. A passage in the building leads to the atrium, through which people with mobility impairments can access enter the library on a ramp. There is a high step at the entrance to the building and the exit to the atrium. A moving ramp is used to cross them. Access to the library is also possible via stairs directly from the passage between the entrance to the building and the atrium.
There is sufficient room to manoeuvre inside the library. The library has accessible sanitary facilities.
The library offers material for the blind and visually impaired. 

Adaptations:

People with mobility impairments:

  • There is an accessible parking spot near the entrance,
  • A moving ramp is provided for access to the building that is installed when needed,
  • There is a ramp for access to the library from the atrium,
  • The height of the library counter is adapted to wheelchair users,
  • There is sufficient room to manoeuvre indoors,
  • The layout of the bookshelves enables wheelchair access,
  • The building has accessible sanitary facilities.  

People with visual impairments:

  • The entrance to the building is easily recognizable,
  • There are no abrupt transitions from light to dark spaces in the building,
  • The signage and lettering in the building have contrasting visual markings and are readable,
  • The library has adapted material (audiobooks, books with large print, books with braille). 

People with hearing impairments:

  • The library counter is adequately lit and enables lip-reading and interpreting facial expressions.

Deficiencies:

People with mobility impairments:

  • The accessible parking spot is not spacious enough and is placed parallel to the roadway and the sidewalk,
  • The accessible parking spot is not marked with a vertical sign,
  • There is a high step at the entrance to the building, 
  • The ramp for access the library from the atrium does not feature a railing for easier use.

People with visual impairments:

  • The access path from the car park to the entrance to the building is not marked,
  • The height of the signboard at the main entrance is unsuitable,
  • The signage and lettering in the building are not placed at suitable heights,
  • The edges of stairs and changes of level do not have contrasting visual markings.

People with hearing impairments:

  • The reception desk is not equipped with an induction loop (not an obligatory condition),
  • The glazed library counter is positioned with windows behind it.
