Disabled people are often seen as people with limitations, but the truth is that they live lives that are not fundamentally different from the lives of others – it is just that the environment and society often place additional obstacles on them. Having a disability does not mean having a less valuable or less fulfilling life. Many disabled people actively participate in society, go to school, work, raise families, engage in sports and the arts, and achieve extraordinary success. The key difference is often in how we enable them to participate equally in everyday life.
Disability does not define a person – a person carries it in their own unique way. Their lives can be just as rich, full and happy if society gives them equal opportunities and respect.
This is also the guiding principle of the project, the National Awareness Campaign on the Social Inclusion of People with Disabilities, which has been led by the National Council of Disability Organizations of Slovenia since 1 January 2024.
The project is divided into two parts: further development of the European Disability Card (hereinafter: the card) and raising awareness in society. Almost all indicators have been achieved.
As part of the further development of the card, we updated the website and mobile application of the disability card, and acquired over 80 new benefit providers. Together with our partner in the project – the Urban Planning Institute of the Republic of Slovenia, we checked the accessibility of the providers’ facilities. Through our social networks, Newsletter and various media, we informed and invited disabled people to join the EU benefit card for disabled people.
As part of raising awareness in society, we conducted two workshops for employees at administrative units, where we recorded exceptional interest and participation. We presented the Act on the Equalization of Persons with Disabilities, presented technical aids that enable people with disabilities to overcome various barriers, both communication and technical, presented vehicles for the physically challenged, and much more.
We prepared workshops for kindergartens, primary and secondary schools, in which people with disabilities presented the types and forms of disability, the challenges they face on a daily basis and the activities they engage in. In parallel with the workshops for young people, an art competition was held, for which we received 109 diverse works of art (poems, drawings, videos, photographs) and selected 10 winners.
With renowned photographer Primož Lavret, we prepared a traveling photography exhibition called No Different Life, in which the photographer captured 25 different disabled people. To date, we have already set up 9 photography exhibitions in different parts of Slovenia. Visitors are enthusiastic about the exhibition, and they are set up in places where the possibility of visiting is really high. Between 29.7. and 26.8. we invite you to the exhibition in the Aleja shopping center in Ljubljana, and in September it will be hosted in the library in Slovenj Gradec.
The Mini School of Performance, led by Lucija Ćirović and Boštjan Štorman, has been running since May 2024. As part of the school, participants learn communication, performance, recording short videos, and preparing a final performance. They also recorded short presentation films of providers of benefits for the disabled, which were very well received both in Slovenia and abroad.
As part of the media campaign, we publish various publications on the topic of disability and the lives of disabled people every month, which you can find: in various local and national print and digital media, on social networks, in podcasts and interviews. Currently, jumbo posters are located in numerous poster locations and on public bus passenger transport throughout Slovenia. We have also recorded 3 TV advertisements, which you can see on various television programs.
We also presented the project abroad: in Poland, in Spain as part of the EASPD conference, an international organization that brings together people with special needs, in Lithuania at the EDF General Assembly and at the Ministry of Social Affairs and Disabled People in Italy. Minister Luka Mesec also presented the project at the UN General Assembly in New York. The response was more than positive, as Slovenia is the only country that has expanded the EU Disability Card project and given the card a new dimension.

We hope that the project’s activities will not die down, as they demonstrate the importance of raising awareness in society about people with disabilities.
