Description of the Facility

The Regional Museum in Kočevje is poorly accessible.
The museum operates in two locations.
The unit in the Šešek Hall is partially accessible. The main bus station is slightly more than 300 meters away. In front of the entrance, there are two parking spaces for persons with mobility impairments, but both are too short. The entrance to the building is recognizable and equipped with a properly designed ramp. The museum’s reception desk is not located near the entrance; there are no suitable signs leading to it, and it is too high and inadequately lit. Next to the reception desk is a touchscreen display with museum content, which also offers some audio materials.
The ground-floor exhibition is partially height-adjusted for wheelchair users, but the text is mostly too small and lacks sufficient contrast. The ground floor also contains an event hall, which is currently not in use.
Access to the upper floor is only possible via stairs, so it is not accessible for wheelchair users. The upper-floor rooms are well-lit, but the exhibition posters are not ideally positioned or sufficiently contrasting.
Restrooms are located on the ground floor, but they are very small and unsuitable for wheelchair users.

Adaptations

For persons with mobility impairments:

  • a partially adapted parking space is located near the main entrance,
  • the main entrance to the building is accessible,
  • the ramp is properly designed and can be used independently,
  • only the ground-floor exhibition is accessible,
  • there is enough maneuvering space on the ground floor for wheelchair users,
  • some exhibition posters in the ground-floor area are placed at a suitable height for wheelchair users.

For the blind and visually impaired:

  • the entrance to the building is clearly recognizable,
  • there are no sudden transitions from bright to dark spaces inside the building,
  • some signs and labels in the building are placed at appropriate heights.

For the deaf and hard of hearing:

  • the building has no major adaptations for deaf and hard-of-hearing persons.

Deficiencies

For persons with mobility impairments:

  • the adapted parking spaces are marked but not of appropriate dimensions,
  • the reception desk is not height-adjusted for wheelchair users,
  • height differences inside the building are not properly bridged (part of the exhibition is on the upper floor, which is not wheelchair-accessible),
  • there is no elevator in the building,
  • there are no adapted restrooms in the building,
  • some exhibits are not positioned at suitable heights for wheelchair users.

For the blind and visually impaired:

  • there is no information board at the main entrance,
  • the reception desk is not located near the entrance,
  • the path to the distant reception desk is not marked,
  • the reception window is not marked in contrast,
  • there are sudden transitions from bright to dark spaces inside the building,
  • some signs and labels are not placed at appropriate heights,
  • information is not provided in audio format,
  • the edges of stairs are not marked in contrast,
  • the edges of level changes are not marked in contrast,
  • most exhibits do not allow for tactile exploration of the displayed materials.

For the deaf and hard of hearing:

  • the reception desk is not equipped with a hearing loop for hard-of-hearing persons,
  • the reception desk is poorly lit and does not allow for lip reading or observation of facial expressions,
  • the reception desk is positioned with windows behind it,
  • the glazing of the reception desk is reflective and glossy,
  • necessary information is not provided in visual format for deaf persons,
  • the event hall is not equipped with a hearing loop,
  • the museum does not provide guided tours with a sign language interpreter.
