Description of the facility

The library is partially accessible, but not accessible for wheelchair users.

The nearest adapted parking space is on the street between the District Court and the park, 100 m from the library. The nearest bus stop is 300 m away, located in front of the church.
The building has two floors. The upper ground floor houses the main part of the library with a reception desk, a computer room, a reading room, and a multipurpose event space. The basement contains the youth section.
Each floor has a separate entrance located in the inner courtyard, accessible via stairs. The edges of the stairs at the entrances are not properly marked, and the basement stairs are not equipped with handrails. At the base of the stairs, a bell is properly installed and reachable, allowing wheelchair users to ring and contact the staff.
Inside the library, there is sufficient maneuvering space along the main pathways. All interior doors are too narrow and have thresholds. The reception desk is not equipped with an induction loop.
In the neighboring building, renovation work is underway to provide accessible restrooms and a youth section accessible to all persons with disabilities.

Adaptations

Physically disabled:

  • entrances are equipped with accessible bells/intercoms,
  • there are no other adaptations for physically disabled persons inside the building.

Blind and visually impaired:

  • the main reception desk is located close to the entrance,
  • there are no sudden transitions from light to dark areas inside the building,
  • the library offers adapted materials and/or audiobooks.

Deaf and hard of hearing:

  • the reception desk is adequately lit and allows lip-reading and reading facial expressions,
  • the reception desk is positioned so that there are no windows behind it.

Shortcomings

Physically disabled:

  • the adapted parking space is not of adequate size, though it is marked,
  • both building entrances are not accessible due to stairs and door width,
  • the main reception desk is not height-adjusted for wheelchair users,
  • differences in floor height inside are not properly bridged,
  • there is insufficient maneuvering space for wheelchair users inside,
  • the arrangement of bookshelves does not allow wheelchair access,
  • there are no adapted restrooms in the building.

Blind and visually impaired:

  • the signage boards at the entrances are not adequate,
  • the youth section reception desk is not close to the entrance,
  • the path to the remote reception desk in the youth section is not marked (floor tactile system, carpet…),
  • signs and labels inside the building are not at an appropriate height,
  • signs and labels inside the building are not contrastive and legible,
  • the edges of stairs are not contrast-marked.

Deaf and hard of hearing:

  • the reception desks are not equipped with an induction loop for hard-of-hearing persons.
