The Republic of Slovenia ratified the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in 2008, thereby committing itself to respecting and realizing the human rights of persons with disabilities. As a State Party, the Ministry’s delegation also attended the Meeting of States Parties in New York this year, at the invitation of the United Nations. The meeting took place from 10 to 12 June 2025.
The central theme of this year’s conference was “Strengthening public awareness of the rights and contributions of persons with disabilities to social development towards the World Social Summit.” The session included three main roundtables and numerous side events and discussions.
Minister Luka Mesec, as the head of the delegation, participated in the main discussion with a recorded video address. In his contribution, he emphasized that Slovenia is proud of two systems that significantly contribute to the inclusion of people with disabilities: the personal assistance system, which is widely available, and the quota system for the employment of people with disabilities. Both systems represent the foundations for successful social inclusion, and the results are among the best in Europe.
Special attention is also paid to raising awareness about the benefits of the European Disability Card, which allows people with disabilities greater mobility and opportunities for integration. In his address, the Minister also emphasized the importance of additional support for women and children with disabilities, who often face multiple forms of discrimination.
“All our activities have a single goal – to build a society in which no one is left behind,” concluded the minister.
