It works in the areas of conflict prevention, human rights protection, democracy, the rule of law, and election monitoring.

ODIHR (OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights) is an independent OSCE institution based in Warsaw. Its mission is to promote democracy, human rights, equality, and the rule of law. One of ODIHR’s most recognized activities is election observation, through which it assesses whether elections are conducted freely, fairly, and in accordance with international democratic standards.

In Slovenia, ODIHR conducted an assessment mission for the parliamentary elections and addressed the accessibility of elections for persons with disabilities in its final report. The report notes that Slovenia has made significant progress in this area. The majority of polling stations meet physical accessibility requirements, certain voting aids are available, and an important legislative change has removed restrictions on the voting rights of persons under guardianship due to intellectual or psychosocial disabilities.

Nevertheless, the mission warns that accessibility has not yet been fully achieved. Among the key shortcomings identified are the lack of accessible election information and systematic voter education in adapted formats, such as easy-to-read materials, Slovenian Sign Language, and audio content. The report also notes that political parties pay insufficient attention to accessible communication, while blind voters still do not have the possibility to vote completely independently.

Among its recommendations, ODIHR emphasizes the development of inclusive voter information campaigns, closer cooperation with organizations of persons with disabilities, and the creation of accessible information materials for different groups of voters.

At NSIOS, we welcome the findings and recommendations of the report, as they confirm the importance of systematically improving election accessibility. Only by removing communication, information, and other barriers can we ensure that the right to vote is, in practice, equally accessible to all citizens.

The full ODIHR mission report is available at the link below.

https://odihr.osce.org/odihr/666278

[15

post-5517","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-uncategorized
["GET
